About Me

My name is Joe Lavis and I am specialized in public relations and digital marketing with strong interests in social media management, brand development, web presence, community outreach and arts administration. I am very dedicated to the work that I do and actively make effort to create authentic and high quality pieces. This past summer, I spent three months interning in New York City as a Digital Marketing and Public Relations Intern for MyKlovr, a startup with educational products that use artificial intelligence. For a year and a half I have been a marketing and events coordinator at Noble Kava, a popular lounge in Boone, NC. Each of these paid positions have allowed me to integrate the abilities I've learned as both a public relations student at Appalachian State University and as an aesthetically aware artist through social media management, photography,

community outreach, graphic design, media relations and other forms of marketing and PR. Outside of my field of work, I am an athlete, actor, scholar and friend to many. For as long as I can remember, I've loved expressing myself in various ways such as writing, making art, performing, playing sports and styling my clothes. I am extremely indebted to my parents who, despite their own struggles, consistently provided me with opportunities that expanded my horizons, familiarized me with perspectives other than my own and all around pushed me out of my comfort zone. When I was just 11 years old, my parents decided to let me tryout for SwimMac, one of the most prestigious and highly regarded swim organizations in the country. I accredit my seven years with this organization for much of my success in life because through the intense practice schedules, highly competive meets and team building events, I learned not only to master the art of swimming, but to be a responsible young man with excellent time management and communication skills. These abilities have carried over into all aspects of my life. I take pride in everything that I do and pay close attention to detail.

When I was 15, I decided to try something new that made me very uncomfortable; theatre. It was at this point that I realized I had a love for the arts. Prior to joining my first theatre class, I had never been able to express myself in a way that made me feel both vulnerable and exhilarated at the same time. I was accepted into my school's advanced acting program and began to make theatre a priority. Through the characters that I played, I was able to discover things about myself that I had never even thought to investigate. I was more confident in myself than I had ever been in my life. I continued exploring my passion for theatre through college as a theatre minor. I acted in plays, worked on costume and prop committees, lead public relations for shows and joined Alpha Psi Omega, the theatre honors society. It is in theatre and the arts that I have had the majority of my public relations experiences. My first position was as the PR officer for the Appalachian Musical Theatre Ensemble. In this position I managed the organization's social

media accounts, created and distributed flyers and promotional content, secured performance venues and wrote press releases for events. Following this position, I became a PR committee member for the nationally awarded literature and arts magazine, The Peel Review. I assisted with social media content planning, advertisement distribution and event planning. During my time with The Peel Review, I simultaneously worked with Appalachian State University's Department of Theatre and Dance as a promotional design intern where I created print promotions and recruitment material.

Another part of my story that I am proud of is my devotion to health an fitness. By focusing on physical and mental health, I am able to succeed in every part of my life with a peace of mind. During college, I practiced and competed with the Appalachian State Triathlon Team. The level of commitment and training that it requires to be a triathlete alone speaks for my character as a thoroughly driven, opportunistic and self-motivated individual. Check out my health and fitness blog, simply-thrive.net, to follow my wellness journey.

Having recently graduated with my bachelor's degree in communication, public relations, my goal is to find a job that allows me to utilize and embrace my talents as a content creator and business professional.
